Mariners to Interview Astros Manager Joe Espada for Open Manager Job

By The Sports Nus Staff | October 13, 2026

Astros manager Joe Espada is meeting with the Seattle Mariners about their open managerial position, MLB.com reported Tuesday. Houston is granting Espada permission to speak with its division rival despite the 51-year-old being under contract with the club until the end of the month. Houston has not made a final decision on Espada's future.

Espada just finished his third season managing the Astros, posting a 256-229 record with AL West titles in 2024 and 2026. But the 2026 season ended badly: the Astros finished 81-81, the worst record ever for a division winner, then got swept by the Chicago White Sox in the wild-card round. Houston parted ways with GM Dana Brown in August, and owner Jim Crane said at the time that Espada's status would be revisited after the season.

The Mariners fired Dan Wilson after a 76-86 season that fell well short of expectations, one year after Seattle came within one win of the World Series. "We need something new," president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said Sept. 28. "It could be a shift in programming. It could be a shift in messaging. It could be a shift in language."

Switching managerial jobs within a division in one offseason is rare but not unprecedented. Craig Counsell jumped from the Brewers to the Cubs after the 2023 season.

What it means

Houston granting permission to a division rival speaks volumes. The Astros look ready to move on from Espada, and Seattle gets a proven winner with two division titles in three years. If the Mariners hire him, Espada would manage against the team he led for three seasons 13 times a year. The AL West just got a lot more interesting.
