The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 in World Series Game 3 on Monday night at Tropicana Field and now lead the series 3-0. One more win gives Milwaukee the first championship in franchise history.
Robert Gasser set the tone. He allowed one hit in six innings and faced the minimum 18 batters. Jackson Chourio went 4-for-5 at the top of the order and Milwaukee broke the game open with an eight-run fifth inning.
Every run in that fifth came with two outs. Milwaukee strung together seven straight hits and turned a close game into a rout before Tampa Bay could get out of the inning.
The history is on Milwaukee's side and it is not close. Twenty-five teams have led a World Series 3-0. Twenty-one of them swept the series and none of them lost it.
Brandon Woodruff returned in the ninth inning for his first outing since July 4. His return capped a night when Milwaukee's pitching and hitting both arrived at full strength.
Game 4 is Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay has to win to keep its season alive and Milwaukee has to win once more to end a wait that goes back to the franchise's first season.
