Jahmyr Gibbs Breaks Barry Sanders' Record With 58th TD in Lions' 45-21 Rout of Cardinals

By The Sports Nus Staff | October 12, 2026

Jahmyr Gibbs just did something Barry Sanders never did. The Lions running back powered Detroit to a 45-21 win over the Cardinals on Sunday with 25 carries for 151 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns, plus 5 catches for 56 yards. His second score of the day, a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter, was the 58th touchdown of his career. That broke Sanders' NFL record of 57 for the most touchdowns by any player under 25 in league history.

Gibbs does not turn 25 until March 20, 2027. He tied Sanders earlier in the game with a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter, then took the record outright in the fourth. In Detroit, passing Barry Sanders in anything is sacred ground. Gibbs just planted his flag there.

The Lions were unstoppable after a slow start. They opened with three straight three-and-outs, then scored on seven consecutive possessions, six of them touchdowns. Jared Goff was surgical: 19 of 30 for 271 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. It was the fourth straight game without a turnover for Detroit, and the offense looked like the best unit in football for most of the afternoon at State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

The record book took another hit too. Amon-Ra St. Brown set the NFL record for most receptions through a player's first six seasons. This Lions offense is not just winning games. It is rewriting history on a weekly basis.

What it means

Detroit is 3-2 and heading into a Week 6 bye with the most dangerous offense in the NFC. Gibbs is now the most prolific young scorer in NFL history, and he has months left before his 25th birthday to pile on. The next test is a big one: the Packers come to Ford Field on October 25 in Week 7. If the Lions keep scoring like this, nobody in the division is safe.
