Michael Penix Jr. to Undergo MRI on Ribs After Exiting Falcons Loss
UPDATE: Penix's rib injury is not considered serious, per Adam Schefter. Penix might be able to return for Sunday's game vs. the Bears, but the team wants to be cautious and see him practice this week before determining whether he can play in Week 6.
Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is expected to undergo an MRI on his ribs Monday to determine how much time, if any, he will miss after exiting Sunday night's 30-23 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Penix was sacked by Ravens defender Tavius Robinson with 19 seconds left in regulation and fumbled on the play. He left for one snap as Tua Tagovailoa came in, then returned briefly before Atlanta punted to send the game to overtime. By the time the extra period started, the Falcons had determined Penix could not go back in.
"What I am going through right now I know, it's not something that is going to be a long-term thing," Penix said after the game. "But today, it took me out for the last couple of minutes of the game, but I'll be all right."
Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Penix will undergo imaging Monday. Stefanski said Penix could not get comfortable enough on the sideline to return after Baltimore's 14-play, 68-yard scoring drive that consumed just over seven minutes of game clock. Penix said he likely would have returned had Atlanta received the first possession of overtime, but sitting on the bench caused him to stiffen up and the pain worsened.
Penix finished 19-of-32 for 240 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in his third start of the season. The Falcons fell to 2-3 with the loss. Tagovailoa replaced Penix in overtime and threw an interception to end the game after Baltimore scored on its possession.
"Knowing me, I'm going to be ready to go next week because I sat out enough in my career, but I'm going to do everything I can in the training room, make sure I get back to where I want to be," Penix told reporters.
