Deebo Samuel Expected to Miss "At Least a Couple of Weeks" with Hamstring Injury, Shanahan Says
Kyle Shanahan confirmed Monday that Deebo Samuel is expected to miss "at least a couple of weeks" with the hamstring injury he suffered in the 49ers' 32-29 win at Seattle, per Adam Schefter. The timeline matches what the team's quick decision to rule him out Sunday suggested.
The 49ers' 32-29 win over Seattle came at a cost. Samuel suffered the hamstring injury in the third quarter, was ruled out almost immediately, and underwent an MRI on Monday to determine the severity.
Samuel went down after fumbling on a run to the left late in the third quarter. He remained down on the turf, received medical attention, then limped slowly to the sideline. He was seen hunched over on the bench before the team ruled him out for the rest of the game. He finished with 2 catches for 21 yards and 4 rushing yards on 2 carries.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport flagged the speed of the ruling as a bad omen. "Judging from the context clues, as we call it... the fact that the 49ers ruled Deebo Samuel out immediately is not a good sign," Rapoport said Monday morning. Hamstring injuries for explosive players can mean multi-week absences.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan had no update after the game. "No, don't know yet," he said Sunday night. On Monday he gave reporters the timeline: Samuel is expected to miss "at least a couple of weeks."
The injury piles onto a battered receiver room. Ricky Pearsall and Christian Kirk are already on injured reserve. Jacob Cowing hurt his ankle in the same game but returned. If Samuel misses time, Brock Purdy's top targets become Mike Evans, Brandin Cooks, and Jordan Watkins.
What it means
The 49ers are 5-0 but their receiver depth is being tested. Evans just played through fractured ribs to carry the passing game. If Samuel misses weeks, the margin for error shrinks, especially with the defense already missing Nick Bosa. The MRI results will shape San Francisco's next month.
