The Oklahoma City Thunder won their game on Sunday night. Then Monday brought the bill. Shams Charania reports that Jalen Williams has a dislocated left ankle and a fractured fibula, and Cason Wallace has a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Both starters will undergo surgery. Both are out for several months, and for Williams it is most, if not the entire season.
Williams went down late in the fourth quarter of the 108-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers at Paycom Center. He drove to the basket and landed awkwardly, his left leg trapping underneath him and bending the wrong way. The arena went quiet. Trainers covered his leg with towels, fitted an air cast and took him off on a stretcher. He raised two thumbs up to the crowd on his way out. It is the latest cruel turn for an All-Star who played through a wrist injury in the 2025 championship run, had surgery on that wrist that summer and fought hamstring injuries last season.
Wallace's night ended almost before it started. He ran into a screen from Clippers center Isaiah Jackson in the first quarter and his left shoulder appeared to pop out of its socket. He had four points, three rebounds and two steals in five minutes before he left. The timing is brutal. Wallace agreed to his rookie-scale extension on Sunday, hours before the diagnosis landed, in his first season as a full-time starter.
Oklahoma City's depth was its superpower for years. That depth is thinner now. General manager Sam Presti traded Luguentz Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe this summer and said it plainly: "our margin for error will be smaller than it has been for some time." It shrank to almost nothing on Sunday. Alex Caruso is the cleanest replacement in the starting lineup, a veteran defender shooting 45.5 percent from three this season. Jared McCain started the second half for Wallace on Sunday, and Ajay Mitchell's role grows with both men out. Rookie Bennett Stirtz will see spot minutes.
The fantasy fallout is immediate. Ajay Mitchell is the pickup where he is still available, a top-100 category player last season whose minutes just jumped. Jared McCain is the next add for points and threes. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren carry even more of the offense now. Cason Wallace managers have a starter-sized hole, and Jalen Williams managers in redraft leagues are staring at the hardest hold-or-drop decision of the young season.
There is no time to process any of it. The Thunder host the Phoenix Suns tonight, the second night of a back-to-back, and the league gets its first look at what is left of the favorites.
