The longest win streak in America is over. Ohio State beat Indiana 19-15 on Saturday at Memorial Stadium, ending the Hoosiers' 22-game win streak and their 19-game home win streak in one afternoon.
The game turned on one play in the fourth quarter. Facing fourth and one at the Indiana 38, Julian Sayin threw it up for Jeremiah Smith, who was in double coverage in the end zone. Smith pivoted, located the ball and boxed out both defenders for a 38-yard touchdown that made it 19-7.
Smith finished with four catches for 68 yards on a day Indiana doubled him on nearly every snap. The touchdown was his first receiving score against Indiana and the 39th of his career, one behind Braylon Edwards for the Big Ten record. His season line sits at 52 catches for 984 yards and 12 touchdowns and his Heisman odds shortened to +100 at BetMGM after the game.
Indiana answered with a Josh Hoover touchdown pass to Nick Marsh and a two point conversion to cut it to 19-15. The Hoosiers got one final chance in the last minute and Hoover found Marsh again near the goal line on fourth and four. Marsh's left foot was out of bounds when he made the catch and the Buckeyes took over on downs.
The win came at a cost. Sayin left late with a shoulder injury and returned to the sideline in a sling. Head coach Ryan Day said it will take weeks before Sayin returns. Freshman Luke Fahey finished the game and Ohio State has a bye next week before a trip to USC on October 31.
The loss is Indiana's first at home in the Curt Cignetti era. Ohio State takes over the lead in the Big Ten and now owns two ranked road wins, the strongest resume in the race for the top playoff seed.
