Lions at Cardinals: Bet the Team That Isn't on Fire

One team is trying to win a football game. The other is trying to trade its wide receiver. The Cardinals deactivated Marvin Harrison Jr. on Sunday as they finalize a trade, with the Texans squarely in the mix and the destination kept secret until after the games. Arizona is 1-3, has lost three straight, and just watched Jacoby Brissett throw three interceptions against the Giants, the last a fourth-and-goal pick-six to end it. The Lions are 2-2, desperate, and catching this mess at the perfect time.

The quarterback and trench gaps are wide. Jared Goff is playing at a near-MVP level in Drew Petzing's offense. Petzing, the former Arizona offensive coordinator, is now calling it for Detroit with his own spin on the same scheme that has shredded the league for years. The Cardinals are down starting left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. for the season with a torn biceps and starting right guard Isaiah Adams with an ankle injury, leaving rookie Jayden Williams to protect Brissett's blind side. Detroit's pass rush against a reshuffled line is the cleanest mismatch on the Sunday slate.

Detroit has its own injury issues: safety Brian Branch (Achilles), cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (hamstring), guard Ben Bartch (foot) and center Cade Mays (wrist) are all out. But the Lions have already been playing without most of them, and the offense has not blinked. Arizona's counters are thin: Jeremiyah Love (ankle) is good to go and Trey McBride is a target monster with 33 catches, but without Harrison the field shrinks. And the Lions own this matchup: 5-0-1 in the last six meetings over the last decade.

The number is fair and the situation is better than fair. Detroit is coming off a 32-26 loss at Carolina as 4.5-point favorites, a flat spot they will not repeat against a team in active roster turmoil. The Cardinals' last three weeks: three losses, a deactivated-then-traded receiver, a season-ending tackle injury. Lay the 5.5 with the adults in the room.

Betting angle

Lions -5.5 (-108). The board's play. Better quarterback, better trenches, better situation. The Cardinals are managing a trade, not a game plan. Detroit by double digits is the likeliest script.

Over 54.5 (-115). The highest total on the Sunday board for a reason. Detroit can score on anyone and Arizona just gave up 36 to the Giants. If this turns into a track meet, the Lions still cover.

Lions ML (-250). The safer single if you want Detroit without the points. The Lions win this game outright far more often than not.
