Klay Thompson knows exactly why he is in Miami. The 36-year-old guard told Miami radio host Brendan Tobin this week that the chance to play alongside Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo was a major reason he chose the Heat after his contract buyout with Dallas.
"Bam and Giannis — they’re the perfect modern-day bigs. Huge part of the reason I’m here," Thompson said. "You always want to be surrounded by great talent. I’ve been blessed to go through a career of being with great talented teammates and Miami just fits that more than ever."

Thompson agreed to a two-year, $11.5 million deal with the Heat, per The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Darnell Mayberry, taking a pay cut after the Dallas buyout. He was due to make $17.5 million for the 2026-27 season. The deal includes a player option for the second year and a 15 percent trade kicker.
The move, in context
- $11.5MM over two years. Thompson took a pay cut to join Miami after his Dallas buyout, where he was due $17.5MM for 2026-27. The deal includes a player option and a 15 percent trade kicker, per The Athletic.
- Age 36, coming off a career-low 11.7 points per game. Dallas moved him into a bench role last season.
- The resume: four championships, five All-Star selections, two All-NBA nods and an All-Defensive selection. One of the best shooters of all time.
- The pitch: Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Giannis holds a $62.8MM player option for next season and is unsure about his future in Miami.

The Wiggins reunion
There is a familiar face waiting in Miami. Thompson reunites with former Warriors teammate Andrew Wiggins, and both sound genuinely happy about it.
"It’s a joy to be around Andrew," Thompson said. "He’s one of the most low-maintenance All-Stars I’ve ever been around. He’s unflappable."
Wiggins returned the love: "Having Klay here has been great. Klay brings so much to this team, a guy with four championships."
A redemption season
This is not the first time Thompson has talked about what Miami offers. At his introductory press conference in August, he pointed at the same thing: high-level basketball and a deep postseason run. "The opportunity to play high-level basketball throughout the season and make a deep postseason run," he said. "Those things are so attractive to me."
On playing off Giannis and Bam: "I’m going to get so many great looks playing off him and Bam. It’s almost limitless what we can do. Coming into this building gives me a whole new jolt of energy."
The betting angle
Do not bet the quote. Bet the legs. Thompson is 36 and coming off the worst season of his career, and the only thing that makes this more than a vibes signing is whether the shooting bounces back. The early signal is not the press conferences. It is preseason minutes, catch-and-shoot volume and whether he is closing games.
The structural case is real: nobody in league history has punished help defense like Thompson, and Giannis creates more help situations than anyone alive. If the jumper is back, Miami’s spacing math changes overnight. If it is not, this is a minimum-salary story on a midlevel deal. Wait for October evidence before touching Heat futures, and keep an eye on Giannis’s $62.8MM player option hanging over everything.
