Seahawks Signing Veteran RB Joe Mixon to Practice Squad
Adam Schefter reports Seattle plans to sign the former Pro Bowl running back to its practice squad once he completes his medical exam.
The Seahawks are adding a familiar name to their backfield.
Seattle plans to sign veteran running back Joe Mixon to its practice squad when he completes his medical exam, per Adam Schefter. Mixon worked out for the team today.
Mixon, 30, is a former Pro Bowler who rushed for 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns with the Bengals in 2021. He spent seven seasons in Cincinnati before a stint with Houston.
What Mixon brings
At his peak, Mixon was one of the league's most complete backs: power between the tackles, reliable hands out of the backfield, and a nose for the end zone. He topped 1,000 rushing yards four times in his career.
But he's 30 now, and running backs don't age gracefully in the NFL. This isn't the Mixon of 2021. Seattle isn't signing a starter. They're signing insurance.
The fit in Seattle
A practice squad signing tells you everything about expectations. Mixon will be depth, a veteran presence who can step in if injuries hit. If he shows enough in practice, he could earn a promotion to the active roster.
For Seattle, it's a low-cost move with some upside. If Mixon has anything left, they've got a proven back for the stretch run. If he doesn't, it's a practice squad spot.
Betting angle
Practice squad moves don't move lines, but they're worth noting for depth-chart watchers. If Mixon gets elevated to the active roster later in the season, Seattle's backfield gets a veteran option in short-yardage and goal-line situations. Keep an eye on the transaction wire.
