Cardinals Trade Marvin Harrison Jr. to Texans, Reunite Him With C.J. Stroud
The destination is no longer a mystery. The Arizona Cardinals are trading wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to the Houston Texans, with the deal expected to become official later Sunday or Monday, per multiple reports including Mark Kaboly of the Pat McAfee Show. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that executives around the league and one Cardinals player all "believe" Houston ends up finalizing the trade. The Colts are out, per ESPN, and the Steelers are not involved, per Kaboly. This is the Texans' move to make, and it is all but done.
The compensation, per KPRC2's Aaron Wilson: a 2028 second-round pick plus a late-round selection heading to Arizona. No Texans receivers are included in the swap. The final haggling came down to timing. Houston held firm on pushing the second-rounder to 2028 instead of 2027, while Arizona spent Sunday morning still pushing for a Day 1 return or at least immediate draft compensation. The serious suitor list was short, and the Cardinals blinked first on the timeline.
The football fit is the story. Harrison reunites with C.J. Stroud, his college quarterback at Ohio State, on a Texans team sitting at 0-4 and desperate for a spark on offense. Houston lost rookie Jayden Higgins for the season to a torn ACL. Nico Collins has missed time in 2026. Tank Dell is nearing a return after missing all of last season. Stroud gets a familiar target who already speaks his language, and Harrison gets the one thing Arizona never gave him: a quarterback who trusts him.
The fall in Arizona is worth one more look because of how fast it happened. Harrison has 5 catches for 85 yards and 1 touchdown through four games, fifth on the team in targets, buried behind Michael Wilson and Kendrick Bourne on the depth chart under new head coach Mike LaFleur. His rookie year: 62 catches, 885 yards and 8 touchdowns. Last season: 41 catches, 608 yards and 4 scores. The talent never went anywhere. The fit did. On September 23 he hired agents Todd France and Tory Dandy of Athletes First after representing himself, and that now reads as the first step toward the exit. Just Friday, general manager Monti Ossenfort told Arizona Sports that Harrison is "a big part of what we're doing." Less than 48 hours later, he is a Texan.
The money is modest for Houston. Harrison is due $776,000 the rest of this season, then a $1.19 million base salary plus a $4.428 million roster bonus in 2027, per Field Yates. The fifth-year option decision comes due after this season, in May. That is the real urgency for the Texans: get him in the building now, get him reps with Stroud now, and have real information before deciding on 2028. The trade deadline is November 10, but this one never needed to wait that long.
What it means
The Cardinals just admitted a No. 4 overall pick did not work out, and they took a 2028 second-rounder to do it. That is a steep fall for the most polished receiver prospect of the 2024 draft, but it is also honest. Arizona's offense belongs to Trey McBride and Michael Wilson now. For Houston, this is a swing at 0-4 with almost no downside: a 24-year-old former top-five pick, a cheap contract, and a quarterback who already made him a star once. If the Buckeye connection clicks, the Texans just stole a WR1 for a future second. If it does not, they are out a pick two drafts from now.
